Washington Planned Parenthood Was Sued for Botched Cancer Screening, Patient Died
In the last year or so we've finally witnessed serious discussions at the national level, if not here in Washington, over cutting funding to the most repulsive organization in America, Planned Parenthood.
PP has tried to draw attention away from their primary reason for existence, slaughtering hundreds of thousands of babies every year, and the millions of dollars they make from doing that. They used to try to get people to focus on their birth control agenda, but recently they've chosen to use their "life-saving cancer screening" work as a defensive marketing ploy. Of course their friends in the media have dutifully and mindlessly played along.
In fact, Seattle's own Natasha Ryan, from King 5, treated us to one such rot-gut story about how Planned Parenthood offers things like pap smears for low income women who "wouldn't have anywhere else to turn".
And never to be outdone in this department, Seattle's ownvillage idiot and abortion industry stooge Nicole Brodeur published an obligatory piece along the same lines.
But AbortionInWashington has for the first time gotten hold of court records which show how a local woman died after going to Planned Parenthood in Federal Way, south of Seattle, for a pap smear. She died because she did, in fact, have cancer, and PP missed it. She sued Planned Parenthood, but it was too late; she passed away, at the age of just 34, of endocervical adenocarcinoma, which metastasized into her brain and liver because it went undiagnosed.
To be clear, a woman died because she want to Planned Parenthood for preventative health care.
The tragedy happened about 10 years ago. The victim's name was Caroline Carnahan. During the course of her illness, she got married to a Christopher Dahl, who continued the lawsuit on behalf of her estate.
From the court records: "The case involves the failure of Planned Parenthood's employee, Jane Watts, ARNP, to timely refer Caroline Carnahan for testing and work-up for a cervical cancer that was in her differential diagnosis. As a result of this failure, Caroline died of cervical adenocarcinoma on September 22, 2001."
What should be particularly disturbing for PP clients is that Ms. Carnahan's story started with her perfectly following the PP love & sex script. She met a new guy, started having sex with him, went to Planned Parenthood, got on birth control thanks to Planned Parenthood, bought some sex toys (sorry, fair readers, but it's pertinent to the case). You see, as PP's own experts testified during the discovery stage of the case, the side effects from getting on hormonal birth control ("irregular bleeding") and using her new "toys" are very similar to the early symptoms of cervical cancer, so PP missed the cancer symptoms, mistaking them for side effects of Ms. Carnahan's obedient following of PP's free love recipes.
PP patients will hardly be reassured by this part of PP's defense: "Dr. Cameron McIntyre ... will testify that Planned Parenthood's protocols do not require further testing if the Pap smear is negative and the bleeding can be explained by other factors such as birth control pills, infection, or mechanical trauma." In other words, they would do exactly the same thing again that led to this woman's death!
And the screw-up by PP wasn't because they fobbed Ms. Carnahan off to one of their short-term, unqualified, "I'm working at PP because no-one else will employ me" nurses. The nurse overseeing Carnahan's case was a Jane Watts, ARNP, who was supposedly "one of PP's very qualified and most experienced nurse practitioners", according to testimony from "Dr." Cam McIntyre, who has been and still is the well-compensated Chief Medical Director of Planned Parenthood of Western Washington (now PP of the Great Northwest). It's worth noting that while the case occurred several years ago, some of the key actors in the case for PP are still there today.
But any "botched pap smear" story must also involve a pathology lab. PP at that time did not do its own lab tests, and even if they missed all the early symptoms of cervical cancer, the lab results should have come back positive. The lawsuit records show that Carnahan sued Skagit Pathology and Washington Pathology Consultants in addition to Planned Parenthood because of their role in the incident, and settled with them (in October 2002).
Originally PP's defense did not include supporting Carnahan's case against the pathology labs. From the court records: "Planned Parenthood has never alleged Dynacare or Skagit Pathology were negligent." It was only after Carnahan settled with the lab that PP did a legal u-turn and tried to pass all the blame to the lab; but the case continued to the verge of trial even after the settlement, with just PP as the defendant. Clearly the judge had decided that there was enough evidence to go to trial against Planned Parenthood alone.
One of the legal dramas revealed in the court records occurred when PP suddenly tried to change their mind about calling on their cherry-picked "medical expert" to give her interpretation of the pap smear slides. No explanation was given, and this move came after the legal deadline to make such changes; they notified the court just one month before the scheduled trial date, knowing full well that this would break the court's rules. It seems they felt desperate. They are of course accustomed to getting all the rules broken in their favor.
The case was ultimately settled, in 2003, just before the trial began, after Ms. Carnahan had died. The terms of the settlement are unknown at this time.
Any would-be PP clients who have bought into PP's snake-oil marketing spiel about being a "trustworthy", non-profit, friend to horny youngsters should read the vigorous legal defense brought by their attorneys: Michael R Green and Steven Caplow working for Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP, in Seattle. That heartless, well-funded juggernaut is exactly what you'll be up against, or worse, if PP screws up your "health care" and you come seeking relief.
"Journalists" like Ms. Ryan and Ms. Brodeur would look less like useful idiots if they did a little more research and covered stories like the dead Ms. Carnahan's in their own back yard before regurgitating Planned Parenthood's propaganda about "saving women's lives".

And The Award for the Most Incompetent Piece of Journalism Goes To ....
Yes, the Abortionssociated Press, in conjunction with the Seattle Times!
Finally the western Washington media cottoned on to the fact that there was a major political battle going on in Olympia and wrote a story about HB1366, the bill to destroy Washington State pregnancy centers on behalf of the abortion industry.
Yet reading the article, you'd be hard pressed to figure any of this out.
First, the article starts off by using the term "limited service pregnancy center" -- without quotation marks. The stigmatizing and biased term was coined by the abortion lobby to serve their political agenda. For the AP, the pejorative language of the extreme left is considered neutral and objective.
Second, it makes absolutely no mention of the fact that the measures in the bill have been found unconstitutional by a federal court, and the Attorney General of Washington has indicated that this bill is even worse.
Third, Robin Hindery, the AP writer -- it would be wrong to use the term 'journalist' -- says nothing about the shocking punitive measures in the original bill that were without precedent and were determined by almost everyone who read them as having been designed for one purpose: to put pregnancy centers out of business by making it impossible for them to afford the flurry of frivolous lawsuits. The language was so bad that the Democrats replaced it with an "injunctive relief" provision. Miss Hindery makes no attempt to explain what the consequences of this would be, or that it would have the same effect.
Fourth, Miss Hindery does not state anywhere that 15 years ago the abortion lobby was arguing the exact opposite of this, when consumers and citizens were trying to get some minimal regulation on the abortion business to force them to tell the truth about abortion to abortion-seeking customers. They fought tooth and nail to avoid such mandates, but now are arguing the opposite.
Similarly, the fact that the ACLU just one year ago was on the opposite side of this issue was somehow omitted by the report.
Even the very title of the article, "Bill seeks to clarify Washington pregnancy-center services" takes the Democrat-Abortion spin at face value. The death of the bill in the Senate is reported as "a relatively common practice" without challenge, when it was actually a significant lobbying victory.
It's additionally pathetic that the massive turnouts from pregnancy care center supporters at committee hearings in opposition to the bill even made it into a piece by the self-proclaimed left-wing "The Stranger", but not into the AP/Seattle Times account.
Some have speculated that with the bill possibly dead in the House Rules Committee, NARAL & Planned Parenthood put in a call to their buddies at the Associated Press and ordered up a press release disguised as a news report to try to breathe new life into the legislation.
Either way, it's high time that the Seattle Times and Associated Press put large disclaimers in "30 point font or larger", "prominently, clearly, and conspicuously" on all their communications that they are a "limited truth news service".

Planned Parenthood Partners with Nation's Illegal Sex Trade
We received this news item last week that Planned Parenthood was running scared after learning they were part of another sting operation by Lila Rose's Live Action.
Today, Live Action released a transcript and video from the first abortion clinic in the series, this one in New Jersey. The details are sickening.
As reported in the CBS News article, "In each case, according to Planned Parenthood, the man sought to speak confidentially with a clinic employee and then requested information regarding health services for sex workers, including some who he said were minors and in the U.S. illegally."
As Jill Stanek reports:
AIW readers will be interested to know that that at least one of Planned Parenthood's Washington facilities was apparently caught up in the sting. (Calls to Live Action to confirm this were not returned at press time.) And we know that Seattle is a hub for sex trafficing of minors and adults. Has anyone bothered to ask where the victims are being taken for abortions? We may have the answer.
It appears that Planned Parenthood can't stand to lose a single dollar, so they don't turn away anyone, despite the sickening canard that they're interested in women's rights. But it's worse than that, as you can see in the video. The clinic manager glibly jokes with the erstwhile pimp and conspires with him on how to best exploit his girls.
Now you would expect Washington state legislators, law enforcement agencies, and health regulators to jump up and take notice, and to open investigations into Planned Parenthood affiliates in our state, where it has one of its strongest state presences.
Actually, not so much.
If you want to know the kind of video that gets the Washington State Democratic Party seriously geared up for action, drafting legislation, you'd have to watch this video of testimony before the Health and Wellness Committee.
Women testifying complained that the a crisis pregnancy center volunteer "asked many of same questions that were on the form she had already completed" instead of telling her the results of her pregnancy test! She was asked what she "did for a living" and what the father did for a living! She was also asked how she felt about abortion!
She also complained that they wouldn't give her a written copy of her test results so she could sign up for state benefits.
The volunteer counselors showed an active, concerned interest in the woman's life, her circumstances, and wanted to help her make a decision she would not regret, and maybe to help her turn her life around.
This is how you make a Washington State Democrat angry.
Rather than investigate Planned Parenthood, rather than inspect their facilities, rather than suspend millions in Medicaid payments to them, rather than stopping meeting with them regularly to set state health policy, rather than reconsider contracts that put Planned Parenthood staff in state health offices, our state legislators let the abortionists write legislation designed to shut down their pro-life competition (House Bill 1366)!
Let's just review this so we're completely clear. Planned Parenthood gladly partners with pimps engaged in illegal, underage sex trafficking to cover up the abuse of minors and immigrants. Pro-life pregnancy centers are spending 'too much time' showing genuine interest in poor and potentially exploited women and girls. And the Democrat legislature is trying to shut the pregnancy centers down on behalf of Planned Parenthood.
AIW, along with Lila Rose, calls on AG Rob McKenna and the state legislature to immediately suspend all payments to Planned Parentood and to begin an immediate investigation into the state's abortion facilities to determine how deeply involved our state is aiding the exploitation of women and children.

In the video the clinic manager of PP Central New Jersey’s Perth Amboy mill, LPN Amy Woodruff, tells “Joe” and “Gia” how to get abortions, STD treatment, and contraceptives for their brothel of adolescents as young as 14, some here illegally.
Woodruff coaches the pair on how to have the younger girls lie about their age. She gives them the name of a mill that is apparently schlockier than hers, Metropolitan Medical Associates, that will do abortions with fewer questions asked.
The most awful part of the video, IMO, is Woodruff’s cavalier business advice when asked what can the girls do during the 2 weeks after their abortion when they can’t have sex?
Woodruff: Yeah, um, waist up.
Pimp: Waist up?
Woodruff: Waist up, or just be that extra action walking by. Because then they’re at more risk for infection, and you don’t want to do that….
“Waist up”? That line will live in infamy.

The Contraception Deception
Not since the editorial board came out in support of partial birth abortion has the Seattle Times published such a wicked and shameful editorial. The editorial – Lift the Plan B Ban – is wicked because it willfully and haughtily lies to people about Plan B and misrepresents the pleas of the pharmacists who refuse to sell it. It is shameful because at a time when the public needs factual information about this drug in particular, how it came to be on the market, and the Constitutional issues surrounding the cause of the pharmacists we are given trite, shop worn propaganda about “women’s health”.
Enough.
There is no Plan B “ban”. Plan B and contraceptives are ubiquitous. They are in our schools. Advertisements for them litter the pages of glossy magazines. Our politicians, even those claiming “pro-life” credentials support their widespread distribution. The combined Planned Parenthood affiliates of Washington received about $20 million dollars from the state of Washington for the purchase and distribution of contraceptives in 2007. They are there for the asking. There are two maybe three pharmacists in the whole state who do not want to sell this product.
Plan B is not a prescription drug. Plan B is sold over the counter. No trip to the doctor is necessary. No prescription is required. It was after the granting of OTC status that sales of Plan B went through the roof. Doesn't sound like a "ban" or a lack of "access" to me.
Plan B is not health care. Plan B is an overdose of the steroid hormone progesterone. The makers and promoters of Plan B claim that for every 100 women who have unprotected sex one time during the second or third week of their monthly menstrual cycle, 8 of them will get pregnant. But if those same 100 women use Plan B, only one will get pregnant. Their hook is the claim that "Plan B reduces a woman’s risk of pregnancy by 89%." What very few people have bothered to notice or point out is that in this scenario 92 women have taken a drug that they didn’t need and unnecessarily exposed them to high levels of steroids. This is basic health care for women? Are we back to selling snake oil?
A debate over the First Amendment is not a “red herring.” This battle is part of the larger crisis facing the country: the loss of the rule of law under the Constitution and the ensuing creep toward totalitarianism. That every branch of our government would collude with Planned Parenthood and big business interests of the pharmaceutical companies to coerce private citizens to violate their conscience in the pursuit of unbridled profit and power should concern every citizen. That the media is complicit only makes this battle all the more acute.
John Senior, in his book the Death of Christian Culture, said it best, “If truth is nothing but opinion, then right springs from the barrel of a gun.”
The Northwest Women’s Law Center, Seattle Times, Planned Parenthood of Western Washington, Professor Don Downing of the UW School of Pharmacy, and the Washington State Board of Pharmacy have not once addressed or corrected these errors and concerns. Instead they keep repeating the words ‘access’, ‘women’ and ‘health care’ like some magical prayer.
The so-called "free press" for its part has done nothing to inform the public as to background on this drug and who is driving it in the marketplace.
Plan B was initially developed in part by an investment from Planned Parenthood of Western Washington and approved by the FDA in 1997. PPWW sold their interest in the drug to Barr Laboratories in 2004 when Barr agreed to pay a total of approximately $21 million, including approximately $9 million of assumed liabilities.
Professor Don Downing of the UW School of Pharmacy came on the payroll of Barr Laboratories to get Plan B into every pharmacy in the nation and secure distribution without a doctor’s prescription by “leveraging” boards of pharmacy. There is no Plan B “ban”. Plan B and contraceptives are ubiquitous. They are in our schools. Advertisements for them litter the pages of glossy magazines. Our politicians, even those claiming “pro-life” credentials support their widespread distribution. The combined Planned Parenthood affiliates of Washington received about $20 million dollars from the state of Washington for the purchase and distribution of contraceptives in 2007. They are there for the asking. There are two maybe three pharmacists in the whole state who do not want to sell this product.
Plan B is not a prescription drug. Plan B is sold over the counter. No trip to the doctor is necessary. No prescription is required. It was after the granting of OTC status that sales of Plan B went through the roof. Doesn't sound like a "ban" or a lack of "access" to me.
Plan B is not health care. Plan B is an overdose of the steroid hormone progesterone. The makers and promoters of Plan B claim that for every 100 women who have unprotected sex one time during the second or third week of their monthly menstrual cycle, 8 of them will get pregnant. But if those same 100 women use Plan B, only one will get pregnant. Their hook is the claim that "Plan B reduces a woman’s risk of pregnancy by 89%." What very few people have bothered to notice or point out is that in this scenario 92 women have taken a drug that they didn’t need and unnecessarily exposed them to high levels of steroids. This is basic health care for women? Are we back to selling snake oil?
A debate over the First Amendment is not a “red herring.” This battle is part of the larger crisis facing the country: the loss of the rule of law under the Constitution and the ensuing creep toward totalitarianism. That every branch of our government would collude with Planned Parenthood and big business interests of the pharmaceutical companies to coerce private citizens to violate their conscience in the pursuit of unbridled profit and power should concern every citizen. That the media is complicit only makes this battle all the more acute.
John Senior, in his book the Death of Christian Culture, said it best, “If truth is nothing but opinion, then right springs from the barrel of a gun.”
The Northwest Women’s Law Center, Seattle Times, Planned Parenthood of Western Washington, Professor Don Downing of the UW School of Pharmacy, and the Washington State Board of Pharmacy have not once addressed or corrected these errors and concerns. Instead they keep repeating the words ‘access’, ‘women’ and ‘health care’ like some magical prayer.
The so-called "free press" for its part has done nothing to inform the public as to background on this drug and who is driving it in the marketplace.
Plan B was initially developed in part by an investment from Planned Parenthood of Western Washington and approved by the FDA in 1997. PPWW sold their interest in the drug to Barr Laboratories in 2004 when Barr agreed to pay a total of approximately $21 million, including approximately $9 million of assumed liabilities.

Seattle PI: A Blight on our City
Women who are suffering after an abortion will recieve no support from Seattle's media, especially the rabidly pro-abortion Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The editorial board is composed of nothing but snide, ignorant ostriches who refuse to pull their heads out of the sand.

Oh man!!! I am a post abortive woman. I also work with women who have had
abortions and men who have been fathers to the children. For the PI to write such an biased article is amazing.
I had a choice...and what was the choice? The choice was to kill my child. That was the choice. I had no regrets for years and years and years.
THEN, one day I saw a fetal model of what my child looked liked when I had him aborted. Talk about shock! Talk about regret!
Did I come to that with Project Rachel's information? No, I came to that regret all by myself and I understood for the first time in 20 years that I had been a party to the taking of a human life. A life that had been created within me.
People, you can write all the rhetoric you want - you can call life 'fetus' which is Latin for "little one" and you can deny all you want...that is your right.
However, there are many women who do regret having had an abortion and there are many women who do suffer emotionally from having had an abortion. There are also women who do not suffer, as I did not, for 20 years...
I do believe that those who castigate us who are working to help women and men are themselves trying desperately NOT to deal with having been part of the taking of human life. The involvement may be as simple as not saying anything when a friend comes and tells you that they will have an abortion all the way to having an abortion.
The good news is that when the anger is over and the denial is gone, Rachel's Vineyard (which are the retreats) and Project Rachel, (which is NOT Rachel's Vineyard but one on one counseling) will be here - be here without judgment and without condemnation.

PI Editorial Board Insults and Intimidates Women
P.I. Editorial Board Doesn’t Speak for this Woman
After reading your editorial on Wednesday, March 21, Abortion: Insulting Women, as a post abortive woman and local speaker for Silent No More Awareness (SNMA), I was insulted by the P.I, editorial board. I regret my abortion in this state in 1971 when I was an 18 year old university student.
As a matter of fact, most women ask for all relevant information before making any decision, especially health care, with the exception of abortion and contraception. We blindly accept taking pills, patches, emergency contraception and abortion without asking much of anything in the way of current or long term medical affects to us and I have done it for several decades myself. It is insulting to suggest that women don’t need or want accurate medical information.
I wish I had had some of this “insulting unnecessary information” provided by an ultrasound, of my baby’s beating heart at 18 days after conception. Maybe I wouldn’t have believed it was only a blob of cells at 12 weeks after conception. Maybe I would have been told about the risks and side effects of abortion, so when I suffered a miscarriage, anorexia and clinical depression and other problems, I would have recognized them as the after affects of a past abortion and sought help. As for the pricey ultrasounds, there are crisis pregnancy centers that offer them by qualified, trained, and licensed medical personnel.
Of course, I suspect your argument isn’t so much about money, as it is about not wanting a woman to see the truth of a little human being (fetus, Latin for little one) in her womb and facing reality. I am here to tell you from personal painful experience that keeping a secret of shame for a past abortion for decades is much more traumatic than being shown what your child looks like in the womb.
Through speaking with SNMA, I and others tell people what abortion is really like and how we got swept up in the moment and made a quick uninformed decision and how to begin to heal from the experience. As for the lack of necessity for additional regulation, (“It's not like the state doesn't already have laws regulating abortions”), Washington State has no such restrictions because of a 1992 state law, which ensured a woman’s right to abortion, whether Roe v. Wade stands or falls. Washington has constitutional language interpreted by courts as protecting a woman’s right to end her pregnancy, throughout the entire pregnancy up to the moments before birth.
In 1970, four states -- Alaska, Hawaii, New York and Washington -- adopted the most liberal laws in the country, allowing a woman to have an abortion whenever she and her doctor decided it was needed, including mine in 1971 and I never actually talked to a doctor, unless you want to count the abortionist, while performing the procedure, telling me that it was too late to change my mind. Your editorial appeared to me as a veiled attempt at intimidation and deception to suggest to women that somehow what is being considered in other states would have an effect on the women of Washington.
An informed woman is an empowered woman, so women should study up on what our state actually allows. Let’s give women access to necessary medically accurate information, including ultrasounds and what happens during an abortion procedure and the risks involved and then the time to absorb it, so that she truly can make an informed, unrushed decision.
Most young women especially, make an abortion decision out of lack of information, lack of emotional and financial support from the man involved, parental pressure, abortion clinic pressure to get it done as soon as possible or lack of confidence in themselves and their perceived inability to take care of a baby. To limit any information and to keep women vulnerable to intimidation by others, including this editorial board, under the guise of concern for women is well, just insulting.

Seattle PI Promotes Ignorance for Women
Uhg. I'm so disgusted with this so-called "newspaper." Once again the PI shows its hatred of science, women and the human body.
Keeping women in the dark about their bodies is the height of patronizing and is incredibly insulting. For whatever reason the PI is clearly more interested in keeping the truth about abortion from women than they are in helping women.

Proabortion Campaign Goes on Offense Against Women, Post Abortion Groups
A story in the LA Times interviews a young womyn named Emma Tupper from Seattle who is helping to fight the South Dakota abortion ban.

This must be the week for going after the post-abortion movement. Here's two more scare-quotes -- "post-abortive support groups" and "side effects". What I'd give to see "reproductive health" and "pro-choice" in quotes in the Seattle Times and PI. Then there's the general dismissal of the reality of post-abortion trauma and a good dose of misinformation/laziness. Readers of this blog know that the American Psychological Assn. stated earlier this year that their support for abortion is not based on the evidence but rather ideology, or what they call "civil rights."
Routeinely? Routinely?! Then how come I hear so many testimonies from women who cried going in and coming out of their abortion? If that doesn't qualify for "uncertain" then I don't know what does. Any other business would kick them out of the store at the very least. The better stores would try and comfort the poor woman and most importantly remove her from the sales floor. They certainly wouldn't try and force her into a purchase. How about the woman who actaully ran out of a Washington state clinic only to have the clinic worker and her boyfriend run after her and bring her back in? What could possibly justify doing the abortion that day? Do the words "come back tomorrow" every enter their vocabulary.
