Right not to be Coerced to Take Human Life

Mr. Speaker, this bill is not about one’s views on regulating abortion or a women’s right to choose. This bill is about the value we place on the freedom of conscience. This bill is a test of all of us in this chamber. Do we nurture and celebrate people who follow their conscience? Or, do we burden and undermine conscience? And not just any issue of conscience is at stake.

This bill would force Americans to violate conscience on the most profound moral issue imaginable. This bill would force Americans to assist in taking what they believe to be innocent human life. Since the Quakers in colonial America were jailed for refusing to serve in colonial militias, our nation has affirmed the right of conscience. Their refusal to take life changed colonial laws and in every armed conflict since, Americans have been exempted for conscience sake. Our laws have responded to protect conscience, again and again.

• Within weeks of Roe v Wade in 1973, every state and the federal gov’t enacted exemptions so doctors would not be forced to take human life.
• Our state’s physician-assisted suicide laws, exempt physicians from being coerced to take human life. 
•  Our state corrections employees are excused from participating in state executions.

And yet, not since the Quakers were jailed in colonial America, would a law punish Americans who refuse to take human life, until HB 1044. No other state, no other gov’t has broken with the long tradition of our nation protecting conscience in this way, until HB 1044.

Padden says committee will have hearing on abortion-notification bill

OLYMPIA… Sen. Mike Padden says the Senate Law and Justice Committee will have a public hearing on a bill that would require a girl’s parent or guardian to be notified before she can have an abortion.

Padden, R-Spokane Valley, is among the 18 sponsors of Senate Bill 5156, which was introduced Monday but is not yet scheduled for a hearing. He said it’s a proposal that has support from parents regardless of their views on abortion.

“If your daughter became pregnant and was considering an abortion, wouldn’t you want to know far enough ahead of time to talk with her about it or get ready to care for her afterward? This bill wouldn’t prohibit an underage girl from having an abortion, but it would make sure a parent or guardian has the chance to have that conversation, to provide that care,” Padden said.

Padden shared results from a recent statewide poll commissioned by Human Life of Washington, conducted by Moore Information. Of those responding, 65 percent were in favor when asked about a proposal along the lines of SB 5156, requiring “parents be notified” before a girl under age 18 could have an abortion; 25 percent were opposed and 9 percent were undecided. Padden said the “strongly favor” percentage greatly outweighed the “strongly oppose” group.

The measure that will come before Padden’s committee would require that one parent or guardian receive 48 hours’ actual notice from the person intending to provide the abortion.

“When you consider an underage girl can’t legally get a tattoo in our state, with or without a parent’s permission, yet can have access to an abortion without the parent even knowing, it puts things into perspective,” Padden said.

In 1995, as chairman of the law and justice committee in the House of Representatives, Padden co-sponsored and held a public hearing on a similar bill; it went on to receive House approval but did not receive a hearing in the Senate.

In 1998 the Senate approved a parental-notification bill; it also received committee approval in the House but was not brought to a full House vote.

Pro-Abortion AG Rob McKenna to Announce Candidacy for Governor

It's been predicted for years now that AG Rob McKenna (R) was planning to run for governor. He's a Catholic and a Republican. He's also "pro-choice". His support for abortion is usually painted as support for women. After all, dead babies don't vote or contribute funds to political campaigns.

My in-box received several notices this week of an impending announcement that he would run for governor. And now the shoe has dropped.

Rob McKenna has abandoned his Catholic faith for political power. As reported to me by one of his old Eagle Scout friends, Rob used to sit around the campfire and plot out his rise to power. The ultimate goal: POTUS.

It's time for the women of Washington state to tell Rob McKenna abortion is bad for women and we won't vote for or contribute funds to anyone who thinks otherwise.

State Politicians Continue to Interfere in Women's Bodies and Lives

The Washington state House and Senate voted to increase funding for Take Charge Program. The bill will make the state's "Take Charge" family-planning program available to families earning 250 percent or less of the federal poverty level. Currently, it is available only to families earning 200 percent or less of federal poverty levels.
From what we read in the Kitsap Sun article the debate was predictibly banal.

We've said many times on this blog: Get the government out of women's bodies and lives. Quit interfering in their reproductive choices and health.

But no. The busybodies in Olympia and the state's sex planners just can't seem to quit their puritanical chatter about "health" and "safe sex" while demanding more money for their bizarre social experiments. Puritanical because the people running and supporting Planned Parnethood have a fanatical obsession with other people's sex lives and a rigid adherence to making sure everybody has sex within the rules outlined by Planned Parenthood.

No other organization on the planet, not even the usually hoisted strawman of the Catholic Church, is so singularly obsessed with who's sleeping with who, how they are doing it, how many times, where and when. Quite frankly Planned Parenthood has probably ruined the sex lives of most Americans with the mechanization of sex and constant interference discussion by the government, media, and educators, etc.


In their email blasts before the votes PP rolled out a  blackmail threat -- "vote for family planning or the poor get it" -- I hadn't seen that tactic before but it was sure to appeal to dim-witted democrats, Malthusian republicans and cowards of all stripes. "For many families who are barely hanging on, family planning is a lifeline; an unintended pregnancy can result in hunger, homelessness, or worse."  Worse? Are you kidding? Do these people think the poor can eat condoms?

Some Evergreen Republican Pols Start to Speak Out Against Democrats' Abortion Radicalism

While grassroots Washingtonians have been attacking the bill to destroy pregnancy centers, we haven't heard too much from political leaders. A few Republicans are now adding their voice and providing political leadership.

One of those is freshman Republican Paul Harris (Vancouver), who sits on the House Health Committee where the bill is now.

Rep. Harris doesn't mince words. “HB 1366 is a bad bill," he told us.

He emphasized the absurdity of going after sacrificial non-profits at a time of massive budget cuts to social services.

"These private pregnancy centers provide $19 million of services to over 60,000 women across the State of Washington," he explained.

"These are often lower-income women who would otherwise be relying on welfare. Like the Governor said, we’ve got to stop kidding ourselves and thinking that government can or should do everything for everyone."

"Pregnancy Resource Centers are exactly the facilities we should be thanking, not punishing.”

Rossi - Didier Fight Creates Controversy over who is Pro-life

If you haven't  been following the race for the GOP slot to challenge Patty Murray, now is the time to get up to speed.

First see the ads by Washington Life coalition here and here.

Then read the response from Joe Fuiten of Cedar Park Church and Dan Kennedy of Human Life of Washington.

Then read the response to Fuiten and Kennedy from state Rep. Val Stevens.

The two biggest problems are with Fuiten's response that, 1. The bill was not about abortion and that "emergency contraception" doesn't cause an abortion. And 2. Dan Kennedy's claim that the WSCC signed off on the bill because they believed that conception would not occur in the time period provided in the bill.

Fuiten needs to read up on on "emergency contraception" and contraception in general. Both can prevent implantation of an embryo. This is called an abortion and results in the death of a human being.

As far as the WSCC and Sr. Sharon go, how in the world do Sr. Sharon and the Catholic bishops know when conception will occur? It's a completely ludicrous and absolutely illogical reason for supporting this bill.

Anyone who has had much experience with Sr. Sharon knows that defending Dino Rossi by citing Sr. Sharon Park is a little like defending Bart Stupak and the foolish "pro-life" democrats by citing Sr. Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association. Wouldn't exactly be my choice for a CYA in ethics but hey, in politics I guess you take what you can get.

Pro-lifers have long been suspicious of Sr. Sharon Park and I dare say that any of them look the the WSCC for leadership on legislation or action on anything pro-life related. The story of that organization, the past several bishops and the lay and religious people who run the Archiocese of Seattle is one for another day, but let's just say that the pro-life cause is just not on their agenda. Anyone who has been around pro-life work for even a very limited amount of time, say a day or two, realizes that they are NOT the go-to people as the culture circles the drain.

In this whole mess there's also the interesting fact that with SB 6537 all the other pro-life legislators in the state were able to figure out that this was a bad bill. Why didn't Dino Rossi?

Now the FDA has approved Ella, the "week after pill". That is certain to also be classified as so-called emergency contraception. Maybe Sr. Sharon can look into her crystal ball and see if any women will conceive during that time period.

Meanwhile the damage as been done and Dino Rossi did nothing to try and stop it.

"Pro-life" Pastor Supports NARAL Board Member for State Senate

If people are wondering why the pro-life movement has achieved zero, zip, and nada in the legislature this latest information from from Terra Mork Writes may help to shed some light on the situation in the state...

Pastor Fuiten is the senior pastor of a large congregation in Bothell, Washington. He has a reputation of being outspoken about his pro-family, pro-life, socially conservative political views. Every election Pastor Fuiten publishes “Pastor’s Picks”, a trusted source for many believers who are seeking guidance on which candidates reflect their values.

According to Pastor Fuiten's web site, Pastor's Picks, he has come out in support of Steve Litzow, an unabashed supporter of abortion. Litzow has received the endorsement of both the pro-life, conservative, Christian Fuiten and the pro-abortion, liberal, athiestic NARAL Washington.

A Matter of Conscience

The Washington Life Coalition (WLC) released a brand new internet video today to appeal to pro-life voters in the state of Washington who have been led to believe they should support Dino Rossi in his bid for U.S. Senate. The video chronicles some of Rossi's statements on the issue of abortion, and then reveals an egregious vote that Rossi cast as a state senator, overlooked by the pro-life movement in Washington. The news of this vote calls into question Rossi on an issue he refers to as "a matter of conscience".

In 2002, Dino Rossi voted for SB 6537 which forces hospitals to promote emergency contraception to rape victims and provide it upon request within 72 hours of sexual contact. Emergency contraception, also known as "the morning after pill", causes an abortion if the woman is pregnant. The bill passed and is now the law in WA state. Physicians, nurses and healthcare workers in hospital emergency rooms are forced to act against their conscience, which is formed by their professional training as well as their moral, ethical and religious views.

WLC is a coalition of pro-life activists who are concerned with electing representatives in government who will uphold the unalienable rights of all: the rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. WLC encourages pro-life voters to take a close look at the other candidates in the U.S. Senate race, as well as with all races for public office, to find person(s) with the will to advance the cause of restoring these unalienable rights for all.

Dino Rossi: Not the Pro-Life Choice

Dino Rossi, one of the challengers to Democrat incumbent Patty Murray, is widely believed to be "pro-life" and "opposed to abortion".

It's time we examined the veracity of that rumor.

Clint Didier: Clear Choice for Pro-life Voters

Michelle McIntyre at Life of the Party has endorsed Clint Didier for US Senate in Washington.

Clint has already been endorsed by Sarah Palin.

I agree with Michelle that pro-lifers would come to be very dissapointed in Dino if he were elected Senator. No doubt many pro-lifers will continue to support Dino in spite of Michelle's spot-on analysis and critique of Dino's statements on abortion, but the fact is that Clint Didier is the 100% pro-life candidate. Dino is not.  Clint would actually help to move the ball down the field on pro-life concerns. Dino appears apathetic.

That's going to be hard for Dino's fan club to hear but it needs to be said. Hats off to Michelle for having the guts to say it knowing that she'll probably be vilified by the GOP establishment and some pro-lifers.

Time to End Tax Funding of Abortions for 'Poor Little Rich Girls'

One of the most interesting revelations from the coverage of the Ballard High School 'Secret Abortion Program' by KIRO Radio's Dori Monson came when an employee of DSHS called in. The caller, who identified herself as Randi, said that not only are we one of the few states where minors can get abortions without parental notification or consent, and not only are we one of the few states where the government -- her department, to be specific -- gladly pays for abortions for low income girls and women, but in fact the taxpayer is picking up the tab for abortions even for 'poor little rich girls' from Mercer Island.

"So if a girl comes in," asked Mr. Monson, "and her family's got money, but she obviously doesn't have access to that money, and she says I can't pay for it, I don't want my parents to know, what does DSHS do?"

Senate Candiate Forum Recap

On February 12th, five of the candidates running against Patty Murray were introduced before a pro-life audience at a forum co-sponsored by Life of the Party and Abortion in Washington. There were eight known candidates actively campaigning at the time of the forum, all of whom were invited to participate. The five in attendance were:

Paul Akers, Dr. Art Coday, Clint Didier (represented by campaign manager Chuck Beck), Rodney Rieger, and Craig Williams. The purpose of the forum was two-fold: to find out the true convictions of each candidate and to show them that the electorate does care about their position on abortion.

Former state representative Toby Nixon (R-45) will attempt to regain the seat he gave up in 2006 to run for the Washington State Senate. His opponent will be Roger Goodman. In 2006, he ran against Eric Oemig for Sen. Bill Finkbeiner's senate seat and lost. Both Nixon and Oemig are pro-abortion.

Update: Roger Goodman is also pro-abortion.

I had hoped that during his sabbatical from the legislature Nixon would have had time to read and reflect on the nature of freedom, justice and the limits of democracy. Just a suggestion -- maybe pick up a book on embryology. The flaws in Nixon's thinking are obvious and elementary so I won't detail them here. It's not that complicated really. We are talking about child murder after all.

Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby have the money and energy to support Goodman's reelection, and they will. The "pro-choice" voters Nixon thinks will come out and support him are a fantasy. Despairing pro-lifers will bring a few votes his way. Win or lose, D or R the 45th District will be safe seat for the abortion industry.

The better news is that the pro-life Michael Delavar will seek the Republican nomination the for the 3rd Congressional District seat held by Rep. Brian Baird.

Pro-lifer Brad Klippert to Run for State Legislature

Great news for pro-lifers in Washington state and the GOP!

Brad Klippert is challenging incumbent Shirley Hankins for the Republican nomination in the 8th District for the state House of Representatives. Brad ran in the primary against self-described "pro-choice" Republican candidate Mike McGavick for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

I first met Brad when he called to ask me how he could let voters know that he was 100% pro-life, no exceptions. He wants every child and mother protected from abortion.

I ran into him at the It's About Life Conference over the weekend and was fortunate to be able to have lunch with him. When he told me he was running I could barely stay in my seat. I called Michelle McIntyre at Life of the Party as soon as I could.

His opponent Shirley Hankins is, according to this liberal blog and commenter, "solidly pro-choice and has supported all of the domestic partnership legislation..." In other words, she's a Democrat. She's also a board member and sponsor of the pro-abortion group Washington Mainstream Republicans. As we've pointed out on this blog before, there is nothing "mainstream" about killing children.

Please help support Brad's candidacy. Brad is an honest man who knows the difference between serving the public and killing the public.

McKenna Waves the Bloody Shirt

Rob McKenna, Attorney General up for re-election this fall, confirmed his pro-abortion choice position for voters today.

"I am pro-choice, and I'm on the record as being pro-choice," McKenna said.

In a statement by John Ladenberg, his democratic opponent, attacking McKenna, what appeared to be an insult to came across as a compliment.

"I believe in choice, and Rob is a believer in right to life,"

Both left no doubt that neither believe in the right to life only the empty code word for death -- "choice".

What struck me about the dispute was its subtle reminder of something fired former US Federal Attorney John McKay said last May at a the Washington Mainstream Republican's annual conference.

"What we've done is take issues like gay marriage and rubbed people's noses in it. ... We raise abortion up on the flagpole every single time to create dissension, to create some line that has nothing to do with what Republicans are about. We should accept people into the party who have divergent views, on immigration, on gay marriage."

Raise abortion up on the flagpole. Raise abortion up on the flagpole.

When I read that statement originally I pondered that phrase. What was he talking about? I never did figure it out but now I think I know. What he was alluding to, whether he knew it or not, was "waving the bloody shirt". The imagery and circumstances are, of course, inverted which would be typical in an age when good is bad and bad is good, but it kind of works in this instance.

Now we get to watch McKenna and Laudenberg see who can wave the biggest, bloodiest shirt.
