This week brought us a stomach-churning story from Centralia, Washington. According to reports, a troubled mother gave birth prematurely at home to a 21-week-old baby and then cut the baby's head off with a serrated kitchen knife.
The state is charging the mother with murder.
The disturbing irony of this case, that media reports have somehow failed to observe, is that in Washington State abortion is legal and subsidized by the state way past the point at which this baby was born and murdered.
What that means is that had this mother gone to an abortion clinic and had the baby executed in a functionally identical manner, there would have been no murder charges. The only charges would have been for about $1,000 from the licensed doctor to the mother. Perhaps the charges would have been to Medicaid, which would have paid in full.
We contacted the Washington State chapter of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) to see if they supported the murder charges in this case, or if they saw them as an encroachment on their precious "abortion rights".
We spoke with Alison Mondi. Unfortunately, Ms. Mondi was not familiar with the story, but after our description her initial response was: "That doesn't seem like the right thing to have done."
We emailed her a link to the news account of the incident on the understanding that they would respond via email. Alas, after a couple of attempts, its seems that NARAL Washington does not want to discuss the absurdity of their public positions when its flagrant immorality is laid plain for all to see in a case like this.
Either Ms. Mondi defends the criminal charges, in which case she exposes her organization's own position in support of abortion on demand at any moment of pregnancy as patently repulsive. Or else she is morally consistent but risks marginalizing the abortion lobby even in abortion loving Washington.
If the Centralia mother's lawyer has any sense, he will mount a defense of his client on the grounds that she was actually just performing an abortion without a license (which is a class C felony, and so carries a maximum 5 year penalty and $10,000 fine.) The fact is that in Washington State abortion is completely unregulated up to the point of "viability". Viability is generally regarded to be about 24 weeks, but is constantly changing depending onthe vagaries of medical science.
And even after that, a licensed physician can perform an abortion if he or she alone attests that the baby was not viable, or if he or she alone declares that the pregnancy was a threat to the mother's health.
There are no regulations as to where an abortion must be performed for it to be a legal abortion. No regulations as to the preceding events (e.g., ultrasound, notifications). It's possible that she could be found in violation of the relatively new federal "Born Alive" statute if she goes with the unlicensed abortion defense, but if the umbilical cord was still attached, she might still be able to get away with it.

Abortion Lobby Gets Desperate; Lies About CPCs While Hiding own Misconduct
In what can only be described as an act of desperation just as the country reels in shock at the discovery of what goes on at unregulated abortion clinics, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and the ACLU are now disseminating false information about crisis pregnancy centers in an attempt to convince legislators that they need to "regulate" CPCs.
In a press release issued January 19, this consortium of abortion zealots stated that CPCs:
It's laughable that that this consortium of abortion cheerleaders would accuse the CPCs of giving "inaccurate information about pregnancy, reproductive health, or options." It would appear to be a case of accusing others of doing what you are most guilty of. A quick visit to this link containing a detailed interview with one abortion client at a Washington State Planned Parenthood will leave you crying out for Representatives Mary Helen Roberts and Tami Green, for example, to pass legislation regulating Planned Parenthood.
But instead they are sitting down with Planned Parenthood coming up with crushing regulations on pro-life pregnancy centers!
Here's just a quick list of some of the other deceptions we've heard from inside the state's abortion clinics and from abortionists themselves:
We might also add that women who are crying before, during and after an abortion are in most cases NOT rescheduled or referred to organizations or people that offer services other than abortion. Women who tell the abortionist to stop are instead told to shut-up or "it's too late." Women in tears are ignored. No other business that we know of, except for maybe prostitution and pornography, ignores the pleas of women to the extent that Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry do.
Regarding access to medical records, getting Planned Parenthood and other abortion facilities to turn women's health records over isn't exactly a walk in the park from what we've heard. There are frequent reports in the media about medical files thrown out in dumpsters and landfills. We know of at least one woman who was unsuccessful in ever gaining access to her abortion medical file.

Study: Washington State Most Pro-Abortion State in the Union
Confirming what those of us in Washington State already knew, a new study by Americans United for Life placed Washington dead last in a ranking of states based on protections for human life.
The top state was Oklahoma.
Contributing to Washington's last position was the fact that the state is one of the few that voluntarily pays for abortions at any stage, for any reason out of Medicaid funds, even with the existence of a multi-billion dollar deficit. You can even get taxi rides to abortion clinics from school and back without your parents' knowing, paid for by the taxpayers, and government officials say: "So What?"
Washington is also one of the only states without any legal restrictions or regulations on the abortion industry whatsoever. It's possible that every abortion clinic in the state is run like Kermit Gosnell's abortion mill in Philadelphia: how would we know? The abortion industry is not only allowed to "regulate itself" -- how many industries in Obama's America are allowed to do that? -- but abortion chain operators like Planned Parenthood and Cedar River Clinics actually get together on a regular basis with DSHS officials to map out state health policy!

Pro-Aborts, Dems Drop Heinous Anti-CPC Bill on Olympia
We got word from Olympia today that the abortion lobby and their allies in the Washington State Democratic Party have, as expected, just reintroduced a bill they tried to pass last year but never got out of committee. The bill is designed to destroy Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) that offer safe and compassionate health care to women in need while leaving the filthy, manipulative, chop-shops staffed by quacks free to ply their deadly trade unmolested.

Jill Stanek, who is following similar efforts in NYC, doubts that such a radical bill will pass even in the abortion capital of America. She sites the bad PR from NARAL's recent granting of an A- to NY for abortion advocacy, the report from the New York City Department of Health that a staggering 41 percent of all pregnancies in NYC ended in abortion in 2009, and the fact that abortions are on the rise after a 20 year decline.
How's that compare with Washington?

The Family Policy Institute of Washington has provided a good summary of the effects of the legislation:
1. It creates two classes of medical/pregnancy centers based on whether or not they provide abortion services.Most craftily, for purposes of seeking damages against CPCs and shutting them down, it defines "person" as "counties or other municipalities". No doubt the City or Seattle and King County would quickly move to shut down all CPCs that didn't have a huge 30-point font size sign in Laotian, Chinese, Russian, Spanish and Arabic stating they don't pass out the sacred condom or offer babies for live sacrifice.
2. Requires centers that do not provide abortion services to disclose that fact in five different languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, Cambodian, and Laotian) in 30 point font on the front door of the centers, and on any advertisement or notice promoting the centers services.
3. Creates regulations and liabilities associated with medical records that do not apply to any other medical/pregnancy centers in Washington State.
4. Creates a private cause of action (lawsuit) against pregnancy centers for violations of any of the above regulations. In lawsuits against pregnancy centers: (1) anyone can be an aggrieved party even if you have never been in or even seen a pregnancy center; (2) there is no need to prove damages; (3) those who sue a pregnancy center can collect legal fees from the center if they win; (4) but pregnancy centers cannot collect legal fees if they win.
In summary, this bill creates significant liability for non-profit, faith-based, pregnancy centers that receive no tax dollars and provide at least $16 million in free services to communities in Washington simply because they do not offer abortion services. The stated reason is that they are afraid that women who are looking for an abortion will go to one of these centers. Why the attention of the Washington State legislature is required to prevent that from happening is something each of us can ponder for ourselves.

Abortionist Deb Oyer, probably the most visible, politically active, and well connected abortionist in the state of Washington, recently gave a presentation at the University of Washington to prospesctive abortionists and teenage girls from local high schools.
Terra Mork, a bright light in the state's pro-life movement, leads off with part one of Oyer's presentation.
Oyer is a late-term abortionist who appears to be enthusiastic about her work. In a matter of fact presentation staged peacefully without fanfare on the campus of the UW, Dr. Oyer details how she perfoms abortions and ensures that the child is killed in the womb in order to prevent having to "resuscitate" a born-alive child during a failed abortion.

Update on Anti-Crisis Pregnancy Bills SB 6452 and HB 2837 in Washington State
Yesterday in Olympia the Senate committee on Health and Long-Term care held a hearing on SB 6452 which seeks to regulate crisis pregnancy centers in a variety of unnecessary and unconstitutional ways.
The bill, promoted by Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Rights Advocacy League (NARAL), would place a series of regulations on crisis pregnancy centers that would not apply to centers that offer abortion. For those of you following along at home, yes, that is probably unconstitutional.

North Seattle Late-Term 'Killing Field' Run by Dr. Charlie Browne
You might think that with Planned Parenthood having opened up almost a dozen abortion clinics in Western Washington in the last 10 years, the blood lust of the abortionist 'community' would have been sated.But at the beginning of January, 2008, late-term Seattle abortionist Dr. Charlie M. Browne seems to have decided to stop sharing his abortion profits with clinic overlords and opened up his own shop in North Seattle, an area that has been free of a free-standing, high-volume abortion clinic for more than a decade.
Dr. Browne used to be the Medical Director for Cedar River Clinics, the largest local chain of late-term abortion clinics. Cedar River does abortions up to "viability", currently deemed to be 24 weeks, just like his new clinic. His work there was reportedly 40 hours a week (according to IRS records obtained by AIW) and earned him more then $200,000 a year, and dates at least back to 2005.

So Much for Dialogue
The Seattle area has a little know connection with Fr. Jenkins of Notre Dame University -- Rick Steves of Europe through the Back Door, a very popular travel show on public television, is married to Fr. Jenkins' sister Anne.
Rick Steves is an abortion advocate and sits on the Honorary Council of Washington NARAL.
One of Fr. Jenkins' excuses for inviting pro-abortion president Obama to Notre Dame to receive an honorary law degree is that it will promote "dialogue".
If after years of Thanksgiving dinners and family get-togethers you can't even get your brother-in-law off the radically pro-abortion NARAL Honorary Council how do you expect to get POTUS off his wildly pro-abortion ideals?

At the top if the list is Rick Steves the travel author and his Europe Through the Back Door series of books and videos. If you've ever heard any of his shows on Europe you get the feeling he really, really hates the Catholic Church. And, surprise, surprise he's also on the Honorary Council of NARAL Washington. Funny how those two things always go together. (How about sending any books and videos of his you might have back to him with a vow to never watch his PBS show or buy any of his products ever again.)
Consider this the start of the list. We'll add names as we get them and tag them under Boycott.

Head of Washington NARAL to Retire
One of Gov. Christine Gregoire's closest advisors, NARAL executive director Karen Cooper, is retiring this spring.The governor and the head of the state's abortion lobby have worked together on many efforts to promote abortion here -- forcing pharmacists into the abortion business, reinterpreting state abortion law to allow for non-physicians to perform abortions, denying women any protections at all from the many abortionists who ply their ugly trade in our state, just to name a few.
Gregoire has long coddled the abortion industry as she needed their funding in her quest for power.
The number of children killed and tears cried by their mothers and fathers because of this duo is a number known only to God.

Report On Our Pro-Life Tour

The pro-life tour across Washington State with Show the Truth was absoutely great! We went from Olympia to Spokane over a period of five days, stopping at abortion mills, colleges, and universities along the way and holding signs and passing out literature.
There were seven of us teenagers along on the tour, and each of us had a wonderful time and really loved every bit of it! It was very inspiring to see all these kids taking time off school and work in order to dedicate some time and energy to saving babies. I think also that we learn very much on these tours!
One college that all of us really like to visit on our tours is The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.
This college is known in Washington for some of its students who are strongly and aggressively active in furthuring the Culture of Death. By no means are all of Evergreen’s students involved in such things, but those who are have made a name for their college.
And of course these students wouldn’t all congregate at Evergreen if the college was not friendly to their cause in the first place.
So The Evergreen State College is a stronghold for the Culture of Death and those who promote it, and we love to go there and educate the students about abortion and its consequences.
If we arrive there later in the day, we will almost surely have a pretty fantastic counter-demonstration and debates with the students. During Show the Truth’s first visit to Evergreen a few years ago, there was quite an uproar. The pro-life people had their signs spray-painted and punctured, and an excited crowd of students were totally unglued about the visit. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and hopefully the students learned about abortion. And Show the Truth made a resolution to return again to Evergreen.
Since that first visit, things have somewhat smoothed out, and the students are accustomed to seeing our display. However, there are still many good discussions between us and the students. During my very first visit to Evergreen, I seriously felt like losing it! I’d never been in any such situation before, and the taunts of the students were almost overwheming. I was fifteen, and they’d say things like, “I hope that you grow up and go to college someday and learn that you are wrong”. The good thing is, I didn’t lose it, and since then I feel like I’ve come such a long way in knowing how to talk with people and keep cool and really help them with their difficulties. We always hold graphic signs of aborted babies when we are at Evergreen. We also hold a few graphic signs of live preborn babies. And I found that the students really like to see such positive graphic signs; they like to be told what they can do. While holding aboption signs, I’ve had several students come over and thank me for holding that sign instead of a sign with an aborted baby on it.
It might be a good idea during such demonstrations to have only a few signs with aborted babies and a lot of signs that show adoption and the life of the preborn child.
Another college that we were really hoping to be able to visit during this tour was Columbia Basin College in Ellensburg, Washington. This college actually has a public room inside their buildings, where people can put on educational demostrations and have great access to students who are on break from class.
Last spring Show the Truth was able to have their display inside this college, and it went wonderfully. We were able to hand out literature and fetal models to students and talk with them.
I remember two young guys coming over to our table rather hesitantly. They really wanted to see what we were doing. I said hi and kind of tried to welcome them over. They commented that I was probably wondering why they, being boys, were interested in preborn babies and pregnancy. I said, “Oh no, because you guys can be fathers!” They immediately approved of that and became comfortable. I found it very wonderful that they loved the idea of fatherhood and babies, and it was an eye-opener to see that the idea of abortion being a “woman’s issue” is only a falsehood that is forced on them; they do not willingly accept it and are eager to embrace their vocation of fatherhood, if only they would be allowed to.
We were not able to have a table inside this college again this year because the student who signed us up for last year is no longer attending that college.
When we arrived in Yakima, Washington, we went first to the Cedar River abortion mill there. Every year this particular visit is very interesting. The employees here all come pouring out of the mill to watch our demonstration. We usually have a couple of vehicles with large pro-life signs, and these really set the employees off.
Once we even had the abortion mill employees out on the street holding pro-abortion signs in retaliation to our signs! We figured that we were being really effective! There is a great little pro-life group that demonstrated outside this mill once a week. Every year they are faithfully there with us and are doing an awesome work.
And in Yakima, we always have one or more news people come out to interview us and take pictures. One of these is a Christian news station and is very wonderful and supportive of us! While in Yakima, we stayed overnight at a former seminary that is now the headquarters for Reach Youth Ministry. This is a group that does a very wonderful work of putting on retreats for young people in efforts to bring them closer to Christ. We love meeting the super kids that are in this Ministry, and they are always excited to see us.
It happened that one of the nights that we stayed in Yakima was the night for Reach’s annual fundraising dinner. We thought it would be great to go to this and give our suppot to their work. As it turned out, the dinner was spectacularly impressive and too much fun! They did a superb job on the whole thing, and everyone there (it was a full room) had a great evening! Some people gave speeches, and the Reach kids put on their own little skit. There were also some sweet little girls who put on this most wonderful little skit you ever saw! They sang beautifully and were totally confident up there on stage.
And wow! the Reach group really knew how to raise money! They gave us some great ideas for our pro-life fundraisers! We were very glad to have been able to attend this dinner and always look forward to returning to Yakima.
And now the abortion mill in Spokane, Washington. Whoa!! It’s aggressive there! We almost always have one or two aggressive incidents while we are in front of the Planned Parenthood there.
People will come up screaming at us, and stop short of physical abuse. So we keep our cameras ready, and are grateful for all the men that we have in our group!
The Planned Parenthood is situated on a fairly busy street right next to a very busy intersection, so we get great coverage for our signs. And the strange thing about this particular Planned Parenthood is that the building right next to it is a daycare center!! Why in the world?!And even stranger is the fact that the women who staff the daycare center come over to us and complain about our graphic signs. Yep, this is one of our easiest cases to argue.
I didn’t get the chance to speak with any of these women, but if I would’ve, I might have said something like, “What would you expect to see if you worked at a daycare built right next to Auschwitz?”
There is a really wonderful lady who puts on pro-life demonstrations at the Spokane Planned Parenthood every week, and she is doing a terrific job. She has definitely met with some aggressive and angry retaliations from passersby. Her husband is a lawyer and is thus able to help her very much with any cases involved with pro-life. He is also Show the Truth’s lawyer.
Several years ago, my mom was able to talk a little with one of Planned Parenthood’s escorts while we were there on a tour. A short time later, one of these escorts quit this job, and we believe that he was the same escort who mom talked with. This was very exciting and great news for us!
While in Spokane, we also stopped at Gonzaga University. We usually have a pretty good reception here. We noticed that the students there, though they don’t always agree with what we’re doing, are polite and caring. This is a breath of fresh air for us. Sadly though, I was told by a supportive student that our graphic signs are very needed at Gonzaga. I guess that a lot of students there support abortion. I expect better from a Catholic University.
One of our last stops was Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. We had a very satisfactory stop there, being able to hold signs and pass out some literature. We also were challenged by the campus security there, who said that we could not legally stand where we were standing with our signs. The director of Show the Truth handled it very well. He actually ended up calling 911 because the campus security officer was getting out of hand and needed to be put back in line. It was comical seeing the police arrive to help take care of campus security! But it all worked out and there were no arrests.
Our second to last stop was at the Planned Parenthood in Olympia, Washington. This was on Friday, when they do abortions. They usually do around eight abortions on Fridays, but on this Friday we believe that they did one abortion. We are hopeful that we prevented the other average seven!
And when we were there on Friday, Planned Parenthood actually called in counter-protesters. And one of them was the former head of NARAL!! So they must be getting desperate. It can be an interesting time at the Olympia Planned Parenthood because we sometimes encounter students from The Evergreen State College. They usually don’t give us too much trouble, but recently someone (who looks like he comes from Evergreen) wrote vulgar graffiti on the pro-life sign on Show the Truth’s truck.
Our last stop on our tour was at the Planned Parenthood in Centralia, Washington. This went extremely well, do in large part to the vast support for pro-life in this area. We were able to hand out a whole bunch of fetal models to passing cars and had an impressive display of signs in front of Planned Parenthood.
Altogether it was a fantastic tour, and we are all very pleased with it! We got to do some great work for life, and we got to meet and work with some absolutely wonderful people in the pro-life movement. We also learn so much on these tours!

And before I finish this somewhat lengthy account, let me tell you of a very unique and very wonderful little incident that happened while we were at the Planned Parenthood in Centralia. I can’t resist telling you all about it! It was one of those things that don’t happen very often, and it was also one of those things that only those in the pro-life movement get to see!
This is what happened: We all suddenly noticed that, a ways down the street from where we were standing, there was a young man standing with a cardboard sign. He had a mohawk haircut dyed pink, and was wearing black clothes with all kinds of silver chains, buttons, and other trinkets. We couldn’t see what his sign said because he was standing with his side facing us, but we (most of us) immediately assumed that he was holding some kind of sign that was against us. However, we did wonder why he was standing so far away from us.
The director of Show the Truth decided to go over and take a picture of this interesting guy. But then we saw him cross the street and shake hands with the guy and start talking. I thought, “Wow, Mr. Sauley (the director) is great at being able to talk and get along with just everybody!”
After a little bit Mr. Sauley came back and told us about the guy standing over there. He said the guy’s parents came over from Russia in the 1960’s, and his dad was a punk rocker. The guy also is a punk rocker like his dad. The guy also said that his mother hates him, sadly and strangely.
So after telling us these things about the guy standing over there, Mr. Sauley asked us, “And do you know what his sign says?” We said, “What?!” It said, Thank God Mommy didn’t abort me.
Report On Our Pro-Life Tour

The pro-life tour across Washington State with Show the Truth was absoutely great! We went from Olympia to Spokane over a period of five days, stopping at abortion mills, colleges, and universities along the way and holding signs and passing out literature.
There were seven of us teenagers along on the tour, and each of us had a wonderful time and really loved every bit of it! It was very inspiring to see all these kids taking time off school and work in order to dedicate some time and energy to saving babies. I think also that we learn very much on these tours!
One college that all of us really like to visit on our tours is The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.
This college is known in Washington for some of its students who are strongly and aggressively active in furthuring the Culture of Death. By no means are all of Evergreen’s students involved in such things, but those who are have made a name for their college.
And of course these students wouldn’t all congregate at Evergreen if the college was not friendly to their cause in the first place.
So The Evergreen State College is a stronghold for the Culture of Death and those who promote it, and we love to go there and educate the students about abortion and its consequences.
If we arrive there later in the day, we will almost surely have a pretty fantastic counter-demonstration and debates with the students. During Show the Truth’s first visit to Evergreen a few years ago, there was quite an uproar. The pro-life people had their signs spray-painted and punctured, and an excited crowd of students were totally unglued about the visit. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and hopefully the students learned about abortion. And Show the Truth made a resolution to return again to Evergreen.
Since that first visit, things have somewhat smoothed out, and the students are accustomed to seeing our display. However, there are still many good discussions between us and the students. During my very first visit to Evergreen, I seriously felt like losing it! I’d never been in any such situation before, and the taunts of the students were almost overwheming. NARAL Director Admits Abortion is Hard for Women, Hangs Up Without Explaining Why

On February 13, as reported here, NARAL Pro-Choice Washington (NPCW) announced the results of an investigation into Washington pharmacies not selling the so-called "morning after pill," also known as Plan B. They presented their findings as a crisis because 10% of drug stores in the state chose not to provide the potentially embryo-destroying pharmaceutical.
AIW spoke to NPCW's executive director, Karen Cooper, about their concerns.
"Retail Choice"
Ms. Cooper initially claimed that the goal of her campaign is simply to ensure all pharmacies obey the new Board of Pharmacy rules “which say that pharmacists must provide this drug to any patient who asks for it."
Ms. Cooper appeared to be unaware of the fact that this rule was no longer in effect due to an injunction from U.S. District Court Judge Ronald B. Leighton, on November 8 of last year, who declared it a violation of constitutional rights, and just reaffirmed last week. Such ignorance seems inexplicable since NPCW was involved in the appeal of the ruling.
Also, when pushed, Ms. Cooper admitted that their motives went beyond benign rule enforcement, since her group had actively lobbied for the creation of the unconstitutional rule in the first place. In fact, acting Governor Christine Gregoire appointed a former NPCW board member, Vandana Slatter, to the Board of Pharmacy last Fall prior to the finalization of the new rule.
Some have argued that it is hypocritical for an organization calling itself "Pro-Choice Washington" to be actively trying to coerce pharmacists, to take away their freedom to choose. Ms. Cooper described such views as "ridiculous".
"We don't see that as a contradiction at all. There's no analogy there whatsoever. One is a personal choice, the other is a retail choice." She declined to elaborate on the philosophical and historical underpinnings of this distinction.
Ms. Cooper said frictionless access to emergency contraception was such an important a cause for them "because of the importance of reducing the rate of unintended pregnancies."
But what interest does an abortion organization have in reducing the number of unintended pregnancies? Ms. Cooper laughed loudly (and somewhat nervously) at the question.
While hearing the question repeated, Ms. Cooper interrupted after the word 'abortion': "Listen, this isn't an abortion pill, it's a birth control pill," she asserted authoritatively. She repeated the point for emphasis, clearly irritated at this stage.
When asked if the medication works sometimes by preventing implantation of a human embryo, as stated for example by Dr. Bruce Carlson in "Human Embryology and Developmental Biology," Ms. Cooper claimed that "nobody knows," sounding decidedly less authoritative. "It might work that way," she admitted when pushed.
"Abortion is a Very Hard Thing For Women"
Returning to the previous question, AIW pressed for an answer to why an abortion group would be so determined to prevent unplanned pregnancies to the point that it would try to take away choices from pharmacists in the process – especially for a group which believes abortion should be legal through all nine months of pregnancy, by any procedure, for any reason, at any age, without delay, at taxpayers' expense, and without apology.
This was met with a long silence, followed by a nervous confession that "abortion is a very hard thing for women emotionally", quickly adding "a very hard decision."
Repeatedly during the interview Ms. Cooper tried to end the phone call insisting that there were people waiting for her in a meeting. It was clear these were not questions she was keen on answering. Early in the interview she became hostile and argumentative. After responding to this last question, clearly uncomfortable, she hung up.
As a result, we were unable to discover what it is about abortion that makes it such a difficult decision for women. If it's just the removal of a blob of tissue, why should it be so hard?
Unanswered Questions
We were also unable to ask her what data NARAL is relying on in its unstated but fundamental assumption that emergency contraception reduces the rate of unplanned pregnancies. In a study published January 2007 in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, a review of 23 studies discovered that there hasn't been a single study anywhere in the world showing a correlation between availability or use of emergency contraception and reduced pregnancy or abortion rates.
Indeed, as reported here and here, Planned Parenthood of Western Washington has gone from selling 0 EC kits per year to selling a staggering 120,000, but during this time the number of abortions performed by them has risen 11% per year. We would have liked to have asked Ms. Cooper if she was completely unaware of all scholarship on this matter, or if rather her organization was being abjectly dishonest. Finally, if these pills don’t reduce the rate of unintended pregnancy and may even increase it, and if this group actually considers abortion as morally inconsequential as a tonsillectomy, what is their true motivation in this campaign?
More importantly, if Karen Cooper and NARAL acknowledge that abortion is a very difficult event for women, why is this the first we’ve ever heard this admission from them? What makes it so difficult? Why have they never mentioned any of the specific difficulties involved? Why can’t one find anything about this on their website? And why do they oppose every single possible regulation designed to protect women at such a vulnerable and difficult time from making the wrong decision?

We were also unable to ask her what data NARAL is relying on in its unstated but fundamental assumption that emergency contraception reduces the rate of unplanned pregnancies. In a study published January 2007 in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, a review of 23 studies discovered that there hasn't been a single study anywhere in the world showing a correlation between availability or use of emergency contraception and reduced pregnancy or abortion rates.
Indeed, as reported here and here, Planned Parenthood of Western Washington has gone from selling 0 EC kits per year to selling a staggering 120,000, but during this time the number of abortions performed by them has risen 11% per year. We would have liked to have asked Ms. Cooper if she was completely unaware of all scholarship on this matter, or if rather her organization was being abjectly dishonest. Finally, if these pills don’t reduce the rate of unintended pregnancy and may even increase it, and if this group actually considers abortion as morally inconsequential as a tonsillectomy, what is their true motivation in this campaign?
More importantly, if Karen Cooper and NARAL acknowledge that abortion is a very difficult event for women, why is this the first we’ve ever heard this admission from them? What makes it so difficult? Why have they never mentioned any of the specific difficulties involved? Why can’t one find anything about this on their website? And why do they oppose every single possible regulation designed to protect women at such a vulnerable and difficult time from making the wrong decision?

WSPA Response to NARAL’s 2008 Emergency Contraception Access Project Report
Just to bring everybody up to speed, you can read here, here and here about the latest in the Plan B/denial of First Amendment Rights to pharmacists.
Now the Washington State Pharmacy Association has issued a statement in response to NARAL's "survey".
Quite frankly, NARAL and Barr Labs wouldn't have gotten as far as they have in pushing Plan B in this state and stiffling the First Amendment Rights of our pharmacists if the WSPA hadn't gotten into bed with them in the first place. So yes, I have a beef with the WSPA though I appreciate their statement slamming NARAL. WSPA was stupid if they thought they could partner with NARAL (these people are in the baby killing business, folks) to push an immoral and unhealthy drug (it's not medicine) in this state and not have people get hurt.
The WSPA should not be "committed to increasing patient access to emergency contraception" and should be fighting tooth and nail against NARAL’s claim that Plan B is somehow the equivalent of a blood transfusion.
Adding insult to injury, the WSPA continues to promote the idea that this drug is helping to prevent abortions. What poppycock!
In regard to this particular "survey", it is irrelevant if the "lack of access" is 10% or 100% -- people shouldn't be forced to do anything against their will or that violates their conscience. The so-called law the Board of Pharmacy passed essentially makes moral thoughts and actions a crime. Is that the kind of country you want to live in?
So thank you WSPA for standing up to the abortion lobby but please take it to the next step and cease your unholy alliance with an industry that is hurting women, men, children, and families.

The Washington State Pharmacy Association is appalled by the sloppy data collection process and inaccurate conclusions about pharmacists reached in NARAL’s 2008 Emergency Contraception Access Project Report.
The data NARAL released is littered with errors, out-of-date information and inaccuracies, including:
· The report marked about 30 pharmacy locations two different colored flags, indicating that they both stock Plan B and do not stock Plan B.
· Some pharmacies listed are out-of- business or have changed ownership.
· Since the report was released, some pharmacies’ flags have changed color.
· Many pharmacies listed as not stocking Plan B have not had any patient demand for the medication but would stock it if their patients asked for it.
· Some pharmacies were assumed to be an access risk because they employ a pharmacist who refuses to dispense it. But these pharmacies staff multiple pharmacists per shift to ensure their patients receive their medications.
· We have confirmed many pharmacies that were reported as not stocking Plan B actually do so.
WSPA is committed to increasing patient access to emergency contraception and does not dispute NARAL’s claim that women should be able to access their medications. If NARAL wanted to help patients gain access, they would work with healthcare providers to identify and promote opportunities to access emergency contraception. Instead NARAL has chosen to broadcast inaccurate survey results which erroneously paints a picture of an access crisis that simply does not exist.
NARAL’s recent survey results are an assault on the credibility of hundreds of Washington’s pharmacists. NARAL’s irresponsible accusations erode the patient-pharmacist relationship that is an integral part of the healthcare system. Any disruption of this relationship puts patients at risk. If even one patient hesitates to seek care from a pharmacy because of these false reports, NARAL has done great harm.

Abortion Lobby's Next Strategy?
Every once in awhile I'll read something that seems important. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't. Either way I thought I'd pass this one along to you and you can decide if it means anything.

Montana NARAL calls the measure "an attempt to redefine when life begins and take away women’s ability to make private medical decisions."
The group says that pro-life advocates support the measure because Montana’s constitution "contains greater protections" for abortion than the U.S. Constitution.

Then I remembered something the "adamantly pro-choice" Alex Hays of the Washington Mainstream Republicans said on David Postman's blog when discussing judicial elections--

I've heard it repeated elsewhere that the Washington state constitution has "greater protection for privacy" than the U.S. Constitution.
What these statements seem to be saying to me is that with abortion regulation being thrown back to the states, the abortion lobby and their friends are beginning to make the argument that state constitutions forbid any regulation of abortion.
Is this a strategy to try and build a wall around the "right to abortion" at the state level?

Gregoire No Show at NARAL Fundraiser
Speculation abounds as to why Gov. Christine Gregoire was not in attendance at this morning's Power of Choice breakfast at the Seattle Sheraton to raise money for pro-abortion candidates.She was the keynote speaker afterall.
About 35 pro-lifers were out in force to remind the folks who were in attendance what "choice" is all about. There were seveal "thank yous" and thumbs-up from drivers and passers-by. Employees of the Seattle Police Department and the Sheraton were supportive of the pro-lifers.
Many of the pro-abortion politicians in attendance exited from back doors so as to avoid the graphic signs and public shaming.

Update May 31: Senator Maria Cantwell stood in for Gregoire at the event, which raised over $52,000 for pro-abortion candidates. Will your representative receive some of this money?
The pro-lifers were lined in the front of the Sheraton and two blocks on either side. The grande dame of Seattle's pro-abortion political and media elite, Karen Cooper of NARAL, exited through a front side entrance and came face to face with the graphic signs. (The woman in black appeared to be with the event.)
Fr. Ed Bloom of Holy Family parish was interviewed by a reporter.
The most common comment made by pro-abortionists to the pro-lifers was, "You should be ashamed of yourself." I guess being pro-life is just too unfashionable for these folks. Two other pro-abortion women who were waiting for the street sign to change made the comment, "Some people are just really sick," hoping I would over hear them. I did.
Many pro-lifers got up at crack of dawn to attend this event and show their support for unborn babies and their moms. Silent No More Awareness was represented by Nancy Johnson and others who could only be there in prayer. (You know who you are!)

Youth and Ambition: The Saga of Adam Smith
"Choice" as a euphemism for abortion is so passé that even the abortion lobby admits they need to come up with new words to describe the killing of infants and those who defend the practice. They constantly try on new shades of lipstick, like moderate, personal responsibility, independent, moderate on social issues, defies labels, mainstream, and the like.
So what to make of the Seattle Times calling Adam Smith (WA-D) a "Raging Moderate"?
From reading this article you'd think he was a "mainstream" Republican.
He's also a vice chairman of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of 44 moderate House members who champion economic growth and fiscal responsibility.Egads! He's a fiscal conserative. Maybe the Mainstreamers can recruit him to switch parties. The rest of you republicans remember what Ronald Reagan said, "My 80-percent friend is not my 20-percent enemy". Whoops. I guess he didn't say that after all.
They don't mention his position on abortion, which is anything but moderate. He's never met an abortion he didn't like and has a 100% pro-abortion voting record. He supports partial birth abortion, doesn't believe in parental notification or informed consent. Yet, his web site doesn't even mention this unbridled support for abortion and he had the nerve to tell voters in his district he "doesn't like abortion."
Maybe his constituents don't have the same enthusiasm for abortion as he does.
He's writing a book called "Youth and Ambition."
It's about a young man who wants desperately to make a difference, to make his mark on the world, and is desperately afraid he won't be able to," said Smith, explaining the book and himself in one sharp bite.I guess when you're young and ambitious you aren't going to let non-voters get in your way.
How sad that this man who was conceived when innocent human life was still protected under law, and given to his uncle and aunt for love and care after his birth can't see that he is in the midst of the greatest human rights struggle the world has ever know; a struggle that is begging for people -- of any age or station in life -- to make their mark and make a lasting contribution to the common humanity of us all. Most likely history will pass Adam Smith by. His only legacy will be page in a book of historical wannabes who tried to made their mark by taking blood money to further their own pragmatic and empty agendas.
