I was on the pill in the mid 1990s, starting at age 16. My doctor at that time told me a woman can be on the pill up to 4 years during her lifetime because being on it longer causes complications. He was the ONLY doctor to tell me that. I stopped by the 4th year because it was so tough on my body. The migraines were unbearable. I haven't been on it since. Other doctors I saw later didn't believe a doctor would tell a woman about a 4-year max on taking the pill and said a woman can take the pill indefinitely.
I've had a friend die of breast cancer at the age of 49. She was on the pill for 20 years despite the history of breast cancer in her family. Her mother was a survivor, yet her doctors told her the pill was safe. She is dead and left behind a 4 year old son, and her husband. So much for safe.
Thanks RCH for your comment and warning. I know that the contraceptive patch also is only to be warn for a certain amount of years. So sad that so many women are not told of these dangers.
You are right - there should be much more information about the warnings and side effects of contraceptives. We've created an infographic about the NuvaRing that you may find helpful: NuvaRing Infographic Resource

I heard a lot of patients has been affected with the side effects and complications of nuvaring. Probably, the most important to use any contraceptive is to ask your doctor and know what are the advantages and disadvantages.
